Fixing Microphone and Audio Problems in Engage

Browser calls need one thing above all: permission to use your microphone. This article works through the quick checks when callers cannot hear you — or you cannot hear them.

Check 1: Browser Microphone Permission

The first time you answer a call, the browser asks for microphone access. If it was dismissed or blocked, click the icon by the address bar (a camera/microphone symbol or the padlock), set the microphone to Allow for Engage, and reload the tab.

Check 2: The Right Device

If you use a headset, make sure the browser is using it — the address-bar permissions panel or your system sound settings let you pick the input and output device. A common culprit: audio playing through the headset while the microphone is still the laptop’s built-in one on a closed lid.

Check 3: The Operating System

On macOS, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone must allow your browser. On Windows, Settings → Privacy → Microphone does the same. Without this, the browser itself never hears the microphone.

Check 4: You Have a Number

If calls simply never ring for you, that is not audio — you may not have a personal number assigned. Click your avatar at the bottom of the icon rail and check for You don’t have a number. See our How to Make and Receive Calls in Engage article.

TIP: After changing a permission, reload the Engage tab — permissions apply from the next page load.
