Default values in medical forms allow you to pre-fill certain fields with information that will be displayed to the client while they are completing the form. This feature saves time for clients by automatically inserting details you already have inside your system, such as their name, date of birth, or other relevant data. A default value means that the answer to a question will be pre-populated based on the merge tag used in the Default value field. #### Step 1: Navigate to Forms [Log into your Pabau account](https://app.pabau.com/) and go to [Setup](https://app.pabau.com/setup). A settings panel will appear on the right side of the page. Select the merge tag that corresponds to the question field. For example, if the question is "First Name," choose Client \> First Name to automatically populate the field with the client's name. Once you have finished designing your form, click on "Save Form" in the top-right corner of the page. When the client receives this form, their First Name (or any other selected default value) will be automatically filled in based on the information stored in your system. **TIP:** You can combine default values and linked fields for seamless data updates. If a form's component includes a Last Name field with both a default value and a linked field, any changes made by the client will automatically update their client card. The date is filled in for you when the form is opened, so the client doesn't have to type it. 1. Drag a **Short Answer** component into your form and click it. 2. Click **Show advanced settings** and set **Input type** to **Date**. 3. Under **Default value**, click **Add**, open the merge tags and choose the current date tag, **\[DATE\]**. 4. Click **Save Component**, then **Save Form**. **Where this comes from:** the date is the day the form is opened for filling in, shown in your clinic's date format. It is a pre-filled answer, so the client or your team can still change it before submitting. **NOTE:** On a field set to **Date**, use **\[DATE\]**. Tags that add a time or the day name (such as **\[DATETIME\]** or **\[DATEFULL\]**) don't fit a date field and leave it blank on the client's form. If you want the date written out in words, use a **Short Answer** with **Input type** set to **Text** instead.
