How to Set Up Blood Tests
In this article, we’ll cover How to configure blood test services in Pabau, link them to lab integrations (e.g. TDL), build a medical form that supports lab requests, and understand key lab terminology for workflows and results.
By properly setting up blood test services in Pabau, your clinic ensures a smooth, streamlined workflow from booking through result review. Staff will no longer need to recreate tests or map each time manually. The system can automatically display the correct lab options to patients or internal users, and results will map cleanly into client records. This reduces errors, saves staff time, and improves clarity for both clinicians and patients.
You will follow a sequence of setup tasks so that blood tests integrate properly into bookings, lab requests, and result review. Below is a recommended order:
Step 1: Create a Service and Category
Begin by adding each blood test you plan to offer as a Service in Pabau (for example, “Full Blood Profile”, “Hematology Panel”, etc.).
Organise these under a dedicated Category such as “Blood Tests” or “Lab Services.”
This ensures the services are available for linking, mapping, and inclusion in scheduling, billing, and lab request forms.
NOTE: If you need help creating services, please take a look at this article. And for service categories, look at this article.
Step 2: Set Up TDL Lab Integration
If your clinic uses The Doctors Laboratory (TDL), navigate to Setup → Labs (under Clinical / Labs & Pharmacies) and create a lab record for TDL with your assigned credentials (e.g. email, account ID, etc.).
Next, create or enable a Lab Form in Setup > Forms (choose “Lab Form” type). Be sure to include required fields: Service(s), Requesting Doctor, Fasting indicator, and any other lab form fields your clinic requires (e.g. sample date/time, clinical notes).

Step 3: Map Tests to Services
Once TDL is set up, you’ll need to map catalog tests (from TDL) to your services in Pabau. Under the TDL setup, you can either sync all tests or choose a Map Catalog option to pick only specific tests.
For each test you enable, link it to the matching service you created earlier (if not already exist). This mapping ensures that when you request a lab, only the mapped tests appear to select.
NOTE: If you need help setting this up, please take a look at this article.
Step 4: Book an Appointment with the Service
When scheduling a patient, include the relevant blood test service as part of the booking or treatment. This ensures the lab request is tied to an appointment and client record downstream.
Step 5: Request Lab from Client Card
On the client’s record, navigate to Create > Lab Request (the plus icon or “Create” menu) and choose the lab (e.g. TDL) plus the lab form you set up. Populate the form fields: pick the requesting doctor, mark whether fasting is required, choose the mapped test(s), and complete any clinical notes.
Submit the lab request. If the lab integration is enabled, this may trigger an email request to the lab automatically.
NOTE: If you need help setting this up, please take a look at this article.
Step 6: Send / Forward Lab Request Email
After submission, check your email (or lab request system) to confirm the lab request has been sent. Some clinics forward or resend the lab request to TDL’s official lab inbox, so ensure the mapping aligns.
Monitor the lab’s inbox for results and handle them when returned.
Step 7: Receive and Match Lab Results
When the lab returns results, these may arrive via email or via the integrated inbox. You must match the test results with the correct lab request in Pabau’s system.
Once matched, the lab request status will transition (Backlog → Received → Reviewing) in the Labs dashboard.

Step 8: View Blood Test Results in Client Card
On the client card, go to EMR > Lab Results and open the specific test result. Here you will see:
-
Test Group / Profile (e.g. “Blood Profile”, “Haematology”)
-
Test / Observation (e.g. “HCT”, “MCV”)
-
Observation Range (green and red lines)
-
Observation Value (e.g. “132”)
Lab Terminology to Know
-
Blood Profile: A combined panel of multiple related tests (for example, DL6, DHB profiles).
-
Group Test: A category or group within a profile (e.g. Haematology).
-
Test / Observation: Individual test item (e.g. HCT, MCV).
-
Observation Range: The normal range visual (often shown as a green line or band, sometimes red boundary lines).
-
Observation Value: The actual result value displayed (e.g. 132) on the far right.
These terms help with consistent communication, especially when mapping or reviewing results.
By following the steps above, your clinic will have blood tests fully configured within Pabau services set up, lab integration enabled, requests flowing, and results accurately matched to client records. Once configured, this reduces manual work, ensures seamless lab workflows, and presents clear, branded results within the patient’s chart.
