The rendering provider is the practitioner who carried out the service (CMS-1500 box 24J). The billing provider is the business that bills and gets paid (boxes 25 and 33), which is usually your practice. In this article, you will learn how to set both for each practitioner, and how to change them for one insurer only. **NOTE:** Insurance billing is currently available for practices in the United States. The practice’s own billing details live on the **Billing profile** tab. See [Insurance Guide Part 1](https://support.pabau.com/en/pabau2/insurance-guide-part-1-set-up-the-insurance-essentials-in-pabau?hsLang=en). **How Pabau Picks the Details** | Level | Where | Used for | | --- | --- | --- | | 1. Insurer override | The practitioner’s **Insurer-specific claim information** | Claims to that one insurer, for the fields you change. | | 2. Practitioner defaults | The practitioner’s **Default claim information** | All of that practitioner’s claims. | | 3. Practice billing profile | **Billing profile** tab | Every claim, for anything not set above. | **Step 1: Open a Practitioner** Go to **Setup → Claims** and open **Claim.MD**. Then: 1. Select the **Providers** tab. 2. **Default rendering ID** shows each practitioner’s NPI, or **Not set**. A practitioner needs one before their claims can be sent. 3. Click **Edit defaults**. 2. To record extra numbers that print on invoices, receipts and superbills, such as a state license, click **Add ID number** (see Step 4). ![Default claim information for one practitioner](https://support.pabau.com/hubfs/Pabau%202%20Knowledge%20Base/kb/obc-2026/489459989733-02-defaults.png) *Default claim information for one practitioner* In the form, every field has a source: - **Use default** takes the value from the level below, so billing fields follow your practice’s billing profile. - **Use custom value** lets you type a value for this practitioner. Under **Rendering provider**: 1. Set **Rendering provider NPI** to **Use custom value**. 2. Enter the practitioner’s individual (Type 1) NPI. 3. Add a **Rendering taxonomy** (a 10-character code ending in X, such as 225700000X for massage therapists) only if your payers ask for it. ![Rendering provider details in Edit defaults](https://support.pabau.com/hubfs/Pabau%202%20Knowledge%20Base/kb/obc-2026/489459989733-03-edit-defaults.png) *Rendering provider details in Edit defaults* Click **Save**. **TIP:** Some payers, often Medicaid plans, give a provider their own ID. Enter it as **Rendering payer-assigned ID**, ideally as an insurer override (Step 3) so it only goes to that payer. **Practitioners Who Bill Under Their Own NPI** If a practitioner bills as their own business rather than under the practice, set the fields under **Billing provider** and **Billing address** to **Use custom value** and enter their own **Billing provider name**, **Billing provider NPI**, **Tax ID number** and **Tax ID type**. Their claims then go out under their identity instead of the practice’s. **IMPORTANT:** Claim.MD treats a practitioner with their own NPI and Tax ID as a separate provider, with separate payer enrollments. Enroll them with each payer before you send their claims. See [Electronic enrollments with insurance payers](https://support.pabau.com/en/pabau2/electronic-enrollments-with-insurance-payers?hsLang=en). **Step 3: Change Details for One Insurer** Use an override when one payer needs something different, for example a payer-assigned provider ID, a different taxonomy, or a field left off. On the practitioner’s page, scroll to **Insurer-specific claim information** and click **Add insurer override**. Then: 1. Choose the insurer in **Insurer**. 2. Find the field to change. 3. Choose **Use custom value** and enter the value, or **Do not include** to leave the field off this insurer’s claims. Only insurers linked to Claim.MD on the **Payers** tab can have an override. **NOTE:** Removing an override affects new claims only. Claims you have already submitted keep the details they were sent with. **Step 4: Add ID Numbers for Documents** **ID numbers** are for your documents rather than for the claim itself. Click **Add ID number**, then enter a **Name**, the **Number** and its **ID type** (**NPI**, **Tax ID**, **License / registration**, **Insurer-assigned provider ID** or **Other**). These numbers appear on invoices, receipts and superbills. An insurer-specific ID appears only on that insurer’s documents. **On the Claim** When you open a claim, Pabau picks the rendering provider from the visit’s practitioner (or the person on the invoice) if they have an NPI or payer-assigned ID. You can change it in the claim’s **Providers** section, under **Rendering provider**.
