# How to Set a Default Option for a Client or Lead Custom Field

If most of your new clients give the same answer to a question, save your team a click: mark that answer as the default. From then on the New Client form opens with that answer already picked, and staff only change it when the client is different.

**NOTE:** Defaults work on **Dropdown**, **Single Choice** and **Multiple Choice** fields for clients and leads. Fields for other things, such as products or staff, don't have a **Default** option.

**Step 1: Open the Field in Setup**

1. Go to **Setup** and, under **Business**, click **Fields**. If you can't see it, switch off **Simple mode** at the top right of Setup.
2. On the **Client** or **Lead** tab, click the three dots next to the field and choose **Edit**. To make a new field instead, click **Create** and pick **Dropdown**, **Single Choice** or **Multiple Choice** as the field type.

**Step 2: Tick the Default Answer**

1. Scroll down to **Field Items** and tick **Default** next to the answer the field should start on.
2. Click **Save** at the top right (or **Create** for a new field).

A **Dropdown** or **Single Choice** field can have one default: ticking another answer clears the first. A **Multiple Choice** field can have several. To remove a default, untick it and save.

**Step 3: See It on the New Client Form**

Next time anyone clicks **Create → Client** (or **Create → Lead** for a lead field), the field already shows your default answer. Staff can change it before they click **Create**.

**IMPORTANT:** A default only fills in for new clients and leads. Clients and leads you already have are not changed, and editing an existing client never adds the default to a field they left blank.

**Step 4: Set Defaults When You Add a Field From the Client Card**

You can also add a field straight from a client's card. Click the cog next to **Details** on the **Personal** tab, then **Add new field** at the bottom of the list. When you choose **Single choice**, **Dropdown** or **Multiple choice**, each answer under **Options** has its own **Default** box.

1. Tick **Default** next to the answers new clients should start with, then click **Create field**.
