# How to Create and Manage Leave Types

Leave types are the kinds of time off your team can book, such as Annual Leave, Sick Leave or Compassionate Leave. Under **Setup → Leave Types** you can add your own, give each one an icon, switch them on or off, and set the order staff see them in when they add leave.

**NOTE:** Leave Types is in the **Other** section of the Setup page. If you can’t see it, turn **Simple mode** off at the top of the Setup page, as Simple mode hides that section.

**Step 1: Open Leave Types**

1. Click **Setup** in the left sidebar and type **leave** in **Search by keyword**.
2. Click **Leave Types**.

The page lists every leave type with its **Name**, **Icon** and **Status** (**Active** or **Inactive**). Use **Search** to find one, or click the **Name** or **Status** column heading to sort the list.

**Step 2: Create a Leave Type**

1. Click **Create** at the top right.

The **Create Leave Type** window opens.

1. Type a **Name**, for example Jury Service.
2. Under **Add icon**, pick the icon that will show next to it.
3. Leave **Active** switched on so staff can book it straight away.
4. Click **Create**. A **Leave type created** message confirms it, and the new type appears in the list.

**IMPORTANT:** Every leave type is also a leave policy. The new type appears under **Setup → Leave Policies** too, where it shows as **Not configured** until you set how much leave staff get and who it applies to. **Step 3: Edit a Leave Type**

1. Hover the leave type and click the **⋯** button at the end of its row.
2. Click **Edit**. You can also just click the row.

In **Edit Leave Type**, change the name, the icon or the **Active** switch, then click **Save**. A **Leave type updated** message confirms the change.

**NOTE:** Switching **Active** off takes the leave type out of the list staff choose from when they add leave, and its status changes to **Inactive**. Leave already booked with it isn’t deleted. Switch it back on at any time to offer it again.

**Step 4: Change the Order of Your Leave Types**

1. Hover a leave type and drag it up or down by the handle at the start of its row.

Pabau saves the new order as soon as you drop the row. This is the order staff see when they choose a leave type, so put the ones your team uses most at the top. You can’t reorder while there’s text in the **Search** box, so clear it first.

**Step 5: Delete a Leave Type**

1. Click **⋯** on the leave type’s row and choose **Delete**.
2. In **Delete this leave type?**, click **Yes, Delete**. Click **Cancel** if you change your mind.

**IMPORTANT:** Deleting a leave type also deletes its leave policy and removes it from every staff member it was assigned to. If you might need it again, switch **Active** off instead.

**Your Default Leave Type**

Every clinic has one default leave type, usually **Annual Leave**. It has no **⋯** menu or drag handle, because it can’t be edited, moved or deleted. Clicking its row does nothing.
