# How to Charge for a Service with a Pricing Rule at Checkout

When a service has a pricing rule, Pabau works out its price at checkout from how much was used, how long the treatment took or which areas were treated. This guide shows what your team sees in the Point of Sale. **Step 1: Add the Service to the Sale**

1. Check the appointment out from the calendar, or click **Create** → **Sale** and choose the client.
2. Click the service. Because it has a pricing rule, its item window opens straight away with a **Pricing rule** section, so you can confirm the price before you take payment.

**Step 2: Enter How Much Was Used**

For a unit, syringe, vial, ampoule or volume rule:

1. Under **Pricing rule**, enter the amount used, for example **# of syringes**, **# of units** or **Volume (mL)**. Syringes, vials and ampoules take whole numbers.
2. Check the rate at the top, for example **Price per syringe**. It’s the service’s rate, unless a different price applies to this client, practitioner or location. Staff with the **Can override prices** permission can change it for this sale.
3. Click **Save**. The line in the sale shows the amount multiplied by the rate.

For a **Per minute** or **Per hour** rule, the time is already filled in from the appointment. If the treatment took longer or shorter, change the **# of minutes** or **# of hours** before you save. If the sale isn't linked to an appointment, Pabau starts from the service's usual duration instead.

**Step 3: Tick the Areas or Body Parts Treated**

For a **Per area** or **Per body part** rule:

1. Tick each area or body part you treated. Each one adds its own price, the count below the list shows how many you've picked, and the **Price** field shows the total.
2. Click **Save**. The line in the sale lists what was treated.

**Step 4: Check a Number From a Form**

For a **From a form answer** rule, Pabau looks for the client's completed form and fills in the number for you. The **Pricing rule** section says which field and which form the number came from and asks you to check it. Check the number, then click **Save**.

- If Pabau can't find a usable answer, it asks you to check the client's form and enter the correct number yourself.
- If the answer on the form is 0, there's nothing to charge. Remove the item or enter the corrected amount.
- If you change the client on the sale, the item opens again so you can check the number for the new client.

**Step 5: Take Payment**

Each service now shows its calculated price in the sale. Click **Continue** and take payment as usual.

**NOTE:** Pabau won't take payment until every service with a pricing rule has been reviewed. If you try, you'll see **Review the pricing rules for each service before taking payment.** Open the item, check it and click Save. If you close the item without clicking Save while it still needs checking, the service is taken off the sale.

**TIP:** When a package session pays for the service, its pricing rule can't be changed. Remove the package payment first if you need to change the amount.
