# How to Build and Send a Nutrition Plan

## In this article, we will show you how to build a nutrition plan for a client, with menus, meals, foods and energy and macro targets, and how to save, send and print it.

**NOTE:** **NOTE:** Nutrition plans are being rolled out to clinics in phases, and your clinic can switch each plan type on or off in [Plans Settings](https://support.pabau.com/en/pabau2/plans-settings?hsLang=en). If you can't see it, it isn't switched on for your clinic yet.

#### **Step 1: Start a Nutrition Plan**

You can start a nutrition plan in any of these ways:

- On the **Plans** page, click **Build plan**, choose **Nutrition plan** ("Meal plans with energy and macro targets"), then search for the client and click their name.
- On the client's card, click **Create** and choose **Nutrition plan**.
- On the client's card, go to **EMR → Nutrition** (**Chart** in the United States) and click **New nutrition plan**.

**TIP:** **TIP:** If **Nutrition plan** isn't in the **Build plan** menu, switch it on under **Plan types** on the Plans page (see [Plans Settings](https://support.pabau.com/en/pabau2/plans-settings?hsLang=en)), or start the plan from the client's card.

#### **Step 2: Name the Plan and Set a Price**

1. The plan is named **Nutrition plan — \[client first name\]**. Click the name to change it.
2. To start from one of your clinic's meal plans, click **Use template** and choose one. It replaces the menus but keeps the client's targets, foods to avoid and advice.
3. A plan is **Free** unless you add a fee. To charge for it, open **Price (optional)**, pick a service under **Choose a service** and check the **Fee**, which starts at the service's price. **Remove fee** makes it free again.

#### **Step 3: Add Menus, Meals and Foods**

A new plan starts with one menu, **Every day**. To give some days a different menu, click **Add menu**, choose the **Days**, add an optional name and choose whether to **Copy meals from** another menu. A plan can have up to 7 menus.

1. Click **Add meal**. Each new meal starts at the next usual time of day: Breakfast at 08:00, then a morning snack, lunch, an afternoon snack and dinner. You can change the time and name. A menu can have up to 12 meals.
2. Click **Add food** and type at least 3 letters. Results come from the USDA and UK (CoFID) food databases, plus your clinic's own foods, and show the energy, protein, fat and carbohydrate per portion. Click a food to add it, then adjust the amount. A meal can have up to 40 foods.
3. To offer an alternative, click **Add swap** on a food, search for the swap and choose what to **Match on**: **Energy**, **Protein**, **Carbohydrate** or **Fat**. Pabau sizes the swap to match. Each food can have up to 5 swaps.

#### **Step 4: Set Targets**

Click **Targets & planning**.

1. Under **Planning**, check the client's sex, age, weight, height and body fat. Sex and age come from the client's record, and weight and height from their latest vitals.
2. Choose the **BMR formula** (**Henry (2005)** by default) and the **Activity level**, and add an **Adjustment (kcal)**, for example a negative figure for weight loss. Pabau suggests an energy target from these.
3. Under **Targets**, set the **Energy target (kcal)**, **Fibre (g)** and **Water (ml)**, choose **UK** or **US** **Reference intakes**, and pick a macro split such as **Balanced 20/30/50**. The split must add up to 100%.
4. Click **Save**.

The **Analysis** panel on the right totals the energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate, fibre and salt for **This menu** or the **Week average**, with the macro split, energy by meal and micronutrients compared with the reference intakes.

#### **Step 5: Add Recommendations**

Under **Recommendations**, type each of the client's **Foods to avoid** and press Enter (up to 50), and add **Other recommendations** such as hydration, timing or cooking tips (up to 2,000 characters).

#### **Step 6: Save and Send the Plan**

1. Click **Save draft** to keep working on it later. The plan stays a **Draft**.
2. When it's ready, click **Finalize** and choose **Save**, or **Save & send to client** to send it straight away. In **Send plan to client**, choose **Email** and/or **SMS** and click **Send**.

**NOTE:** **NOTE:** A finalised nutrition plan appears in the client's portal, even if you haven't sent it. A draft never does. If you close the send window without sending, you'll see "Not sent. The nutrition plan is saved in Plans." and the plan stays a draft.

#### **Step 7: Preview, Print and Manage the Plan**

Click **Preview** to see the plan as the client sees it, and **Print** it from there. On the client's **Nutrition** tab, each plan's menu offers **Open**, **Preview**, **Send to client**, **Duplicate** (a new draft copy) and **Delete**. A plan that has been paid for, invoiced or accepted by the client can't be changed, and a paid or started plan can't be deleted.

#### **Set Up Your Meal Plan Templates and Foods**

Go to **Setup** and, under **Clinical**, click **Nutrition**. **Meal plan templates** holds the meal plans your team can start from, and **Custom foods** holds your clinic's own foods and recipes, with nutrients per 100 g and up to 20 portions each. Custom foods are searched alongside the USDA and UK databases. Foods are copied into a plan when added, so later changes never alter a saved plan.
