[Medical Forms Components & Fields](https://support.pabau.com/en/pabau2/clinical?hsLang=en#medical-forms-components-fields) # How to Add a Calculated Field to a Medical Form A **Calculated Field** works out a value from other answers on the same form, using a formula you write once, for example a BMI from weight and height. The value updates as soon as the answers are filled in and can’t be typed over, so it is always worked out the same way. **Step 1: Add the Questions the Formula Uses** Go to **Setup**, click **Forms** under Clinical and open the form. Make sure the questions your formula needs are on the form first, for example a **Short answer** for **Weight (kg)** and another for **Height (cm)**. **NOTE:** Only **Short answer**, **Dropdown**, **Single Choice** and **Slider** components can feed a formula. Pabau uses the first number in each answer, so an answer such as “68 kg” counts as 68. **Step 2: Add the Calculated Field** 1. On the **Components** tab, drag **Calculated Field** from the **General** group onto the form, below the questions it uses. You can also click it to add it to the end of the form. 2. Under **Use values from**, tick each question the formula needs. Each one you tick is added to the **Formula** box as a tag with the question’s name in square brackets, such as **\[Weight (kg)\]**. 2. In **Formula**, combine the tags with **+ - \* / ^** and brackets. You can also use **abs**, **sqrt**, **round**, **min** and **max**. For a BMI the formula is **\[Weight (kg)\] / ((\[Height (cm)\] / 100) ^ 2)**. 3. Set **Decimal places** to how many decimals the result should show (2 unless you change it, up to 6). 4. The component can’t be saved until it has a question, a valid formula and at least one ticked field. **TIP:** If you rename a question that a formula uses, change its tag in the **Formula** box to the new name too, otherwise Pabau reports that the tag doesn’t match a ticked field. **Step 4: See It Calculate in a Note** When your team fills in the form on the client card, the Calculated Field shows **Calculated from other answers** until every question in the formula is answered. As soon as they are, the result appears and updates if an answer changes. Forms that clients fill in online show the field as an ordinary answer box.
